Condition Blue
This article and documentary resulted from over a year of reporting in the Stockton, California community, focusing on police and community relations.
“More people in my city have endured what I have endured, than haven’t. More people of color anyway. That guilty until proven innocent, that instant presumption of guilt, that’s par for the course.”
– Jagada Chambers, Stockton resident, member of Fathers and Families of San Joaquin
“If you ask anybody that decided they wanted to be a cop, they wanted to go out and make a difference in the community that they’re working in. This is probably one of the best places to do it.”
– Stockton Police Officer Marc Parker

Different from loneliness, social isolation is not an emotional state, but rather a state of separation between an individual and any sense of community. Social isolation is also often associated with profound psychological impacts and negative health effects. For some, these dangers are further exacerbated by such factors as where they are living or what their life circumstances are. The stories in this collection focus on those specific scenarios, and how people in those communities combat social isolation.

The pandemic poses a significant threat to Indigenous peoples who historically are at a higher risk from communicable diseases and tend to have higher rates of chronic medical issues. Despite this adversity, however, many Indigenous communities are creating their own public health solutions. The stories in this collection look at a few of these responses and how they have alleviated the impact of the pandemic.

When reporting on solutions journalism, several key pieces of criteria must be included to report on the whole story. This can seem challenging when limited by a time constraint, which is often the case for local television news. The stories in this collection, however, tell a different story by reporting with a solutions lens within segments that are all under three minutes.

From collaborative efforts where community members created their own food production and supply network to mobile markets that accept wireless food stamps, groups across the United States are working to increase access through a cohort of creative ideas. Black Birds
This is a story about two best friends from East Oakland. At 17, the two were separated. One was arrested for and convicted of robbery and use of a firearm. He spent the next nine years of his life being shuffled from prison to prison. The other went on to attend community college and then UC Berkeley. This is their story of loyalty and love for one another.
